Unicode has many crosses. The Latin cross (✝) is the Christian symbol; the dagger (†) is a typographic mark for footnotes and for “deceased” after a name; the double dagger (‡) is the next footnote level.

Use † and ‡ for footnotes after the asterisk (*). For religious or decorative use pick ✝ ✞ ✟ (Latin), ☦ (Orthodox), ✠ (Maltese) or ✚ (heavy Greek cross). The emoji ✝️ renders as a colored icon on phones.
